YAICHI Founder-led project

Developing a multi-category marketplace connecting Hong Kong customers with Japan.

YAICHI is an online marketplace designed to help customers in Hong Kong discover and purchase products associated with Japanese shopping and everyday life.

The project required a substantially more complex structure than a conventional single-brand online store. It needed to organize a broad product catalogue, multiple categories, individual store areas, promotional content, customer functions and cross-border shopping information within one connected platform.

The complete e-commerce website was developed as a founder-led project by Pui Lun Li (Jan) in 2024.

The business

YAICHI brings together Japanese food, beauty, healthcare, household, kitchen, lifestyle, character and seasonal products within a multi-category shopping environment.

The platform combines product commerce with themed campaigns, individual store areas, membership functions, customer information and content related to Japanese shopping and lifestyle. Its structure supports both customers looking for a particular item and visitors browsing across categories, brands or seasonal themes.

Project focus

The project needed to organize a large and varied catalogue without making the customer experience feel fragmented.

Unlike a conventional brand store, the platform required multiple levels of navigation connecting major product categories, individual merchants or store areas, product pages, promotional campaigns, customer accounts, wish lists and supporting information.

It also needed to communicate the relationship between Japanese sellers, product availability and the Hong Kong customer experience.

Our role

Pui Lun Li (Jan) led the complete e-commerce website project, including platform planning, marketplace structure, information architecture, user experience, interface direction, category organization and implementation.

The work focused on translating a complex commercial model into a navigable customer-facing platform. This included defining how customers would move between broad categories, individual store areas, promotional content and specific products.

The products, promotions and merchants shown on the live platform are managed by the operator. The platform may have continued to develop after the original website project.

How the work was approached

01
Structuring a large product universe

A layered category system was developed to organize products across food, beauty, health, household, lifestyle and other major shopping areas.

02
Supporting marketplace discovery

The platform allows customers to discover products through categories, themes, promotions, brands and individual store areas rather than relying on one browsing method.

03
Integrating commerce and content

Promotional pages and themed campaigns were incorporated alongside conventional shopping functions, supporting seasonal activity and more editorial product discovery.

04
Creating a scalable platform foundation

The website structure was designed to accommodate continuing catalogue growth, additional merchants, new promotions, customer functions and changing product availability.

YAICHI homepage product rail of Japanese snacks with prices and merchant names, above a promotional banner
Themed product rails carry the merchant name beside every item, so a shopper can see which Japanese seller a product ships from before opening it.
YAICHI merchant directory listing Japanese sellers with prefecture, founding year and profile summary
The merchant directory is treated as a browsable layer of its own: each seller carries its prefecture, founding year and a short profile, so the marketplace model stays legible.
YAICHI category page with sub-category, price band and merchant filters beside a product grid
Category pages narrow a large catalogue by sub-category, price band and individual merchant, with item counts shown against each filter.
YAICHI product page with image gallery, breadcrumb, merchant, price and add-to-cart
Product pages open with the breadcrumb trail and the selling merchant, then price, quantity and the store-level shipping offer.
YAICHI cart grouped by merchant with dispatch origin, order summary and promotion-code entry
The cart groups items by merchant and shows each dispatch origin, keeping a multi-seller order comprehensible at checkout.

The completed outcome

The completed project established a full e-commerce marketplace capable of organizing a large catalogue and connecting multiple forms of product discovery within one customer experience.

Visitors can explore major categories, browse individual store areas, search for products, access themed campaigns, review product information and use standard customer and shopping functions within one platform.

The result was a scalable digital foundation capable of supporting continuing product additions, new merchants, changing campaigns and the broader development of the YAICHI shopping ecosystem.
